David Pryor joined the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory (MPFSL) in 1970, initially training as a specialist in Criminalistics and contact traces. In 1972 he transferred to the Firearms Unit and has made this his specialty for the rest of his career. In 1996 the MPFSL merged with the Home Office to become the Forensic Science Service (FSS). He worked with FSS as an operational scientist until 2008, dealing with all aspects of firearms crime. He has held various external posts during his career, such as Chairman of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes Firearms Working Group and Technical Advisor to the Home Office on matters concerning firearms legislation. He has lectured widely and currently holds the post of Assistant Tutor at the University of East Anglia.
