The Thesis/Dissertation Defense

Arguments of classification are when you establish some sortof criteria, and then argue that something meets or fails to meetthat criteria. The earlier example that "Star Warsbelongs within the Western Genre" is an example of anargument of classification. Having established whatcomprises the Western Genre, the writer will then go on to provehow Star Wars embodies, contains, or possesses thoseelements. The writer will, in other words, prove that StarWars meets that criteria.

Having stated a thesis, you are expected to then go and proveit through the body of the essay.

A summing up should repeat the most important issues raised in your thesis (particularly in the discussion), although preferably stated in a (slightly) different way. For example, you could frame the issues within a wider context.

…cite experts who agree with you

You MUST choose one side or the other when you write an argument paper!

A banal thesis statement is a statement that does notreally say anything–it is in fact meaningless because it iseither so overly general or so evident as to not be ofsignificance. Here's an example from literature. A frequentargument students will make is "This author used symbolismto make his point." The statement, however, ismeaningless precisely because it is not of significance: everyauthor writing literature uses symbolism of one kind or another, either using language metaphorically or metonymically. Thus, toattempt to single out or make a distinction of a piece for using"symbolism" is to not say anything that even needsproving to begin with.

3. Try not to be overly influenced at this time bywhat you feel others expect from you (your colleagues, your profession, your academic department, etc.). You have a much better chance of selectinga topic that will be really of interest to you if it is your topic. Thiswill be one of the few opportunities you may have in your professionallife to focus in on a research topic that is really of your own choosing.

…claim to be an expert if you’re not one

…use weak qualifiers like “I believe,” “I feel,” or “I think”—just tell us!

Don’t be afraid to tell others exactly how you think things should go because that’s what we expect from an argument paper. You’re in charge now, what do YOU think?

By addressing the opposition you achieve the following goals:

The outline gives an overview of the main points of your thesis. It clarifies the structure of your thesis and helps you find the correct focus for your work. The outline can also be used in supervision sessions, especially in the beginning. You might find that you need to restructure your thesis. Working on your outline can then be a good way of making sense of the necessary changes. A good outline shows how the different parts relate to each other, and is a useful .

How do you know that you have drafted a research question? Most importantly, a research question is something that . If not, you have probably come up with a theme or field, not a question.

Stage 2 - Preparing the Proposal

Your research question will be your guide as your writing proceeds. If you are working independently, you are also free to modify it as you go along.

Stage 3- Conducting the Research

The research question can be formulated as one main question with (a few) more specific sub-questions or in the form of a hypothesis that will be tested.

Stage 4- Writing the Research Paper*

One of the first tasks of a researcher is defining the scope of a study, i.e., its area (theme, field) and the amount of information to be included. Narrowing the scope of your thesis can be time-consuming. Paradoxically, the more you limit the scope, the more interesting it becomes. This is because a narrower scope lets you clarify the problem and study it at greater depth, whereas very broad research questions only allow a superficial treatment.

Stage 5- Sharing the Research Outcomes with Others

It often makes sense to put the outline at the end of the introduction, but this rule is not set in stone. Use discretion: What is most helpful for the reader? The information should come at the right point – not too early and not too late.
